Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a crucial role in preventing tooth decay and
even reversing it in the early stages.
Here are some key points about fluoride and its importance in dental care:
- Fluoridated Water: Many communities add a small amount of fluoride to their
water supply as a public health measure to help strengthen residents' teeth. This practice
is aimed at reducing the risk of tooth decay in the local population.
- Fluoride in Food: Fluoride occurs naturally in various foods, including
pickles, grape juice, spinach, and tomatoes. Consuming these foods can contribute to the
intake of fluoride.
- Fluoride in Oral Care Products: Fluoride is a common ingredient in most
toothpaste formulations and is also found in some mouthwashes. Its presence in oral care
products is intended to help strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay.
Fluoride acts by enhancing the strength of tooth enamel, which is the hard outer layer that
shields the more vulnerable dentin beneath. It has the capacity to remineralize small
micro-cavities before they have a chance to progress into larger, more problematic cavities.
We Offer Fluoride Treatments
At our dental office, we offer professional fluoride treatments, particularly for children who
are often at a higher risk of developing cavities as their teeth grow and they learn good oral
hygiene habits. These treatments are typically administered during regular six-month dental
cleaning appointments. The dentist applies fluoride varnish to the teeth using a gel, foam, or
rinse. In some cases, we may also recommend fluoride treatments for adults who are at an
elevated risk of tooth decay.
Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride is always recommended as part of a comprehensive oral
care routine to help protect your teeth from decay.
